First Harvest from 2011 Plantings this weekWe are planning our first harvests from the 2011 plantings for Thursday of this week. While we have been harvesting overwintered spinach for almost a month now, we will be harvesting spicy salad mix (red and green oakleaf lettuce, red russian kale, mizuna, red giant mustard, and arugula) that was planted on February 9th. So that means what takes 3 and 4 weeks in mid April through May to be ready to harvest takes 7 weeks in the early February plantings. We are also harvesting cilantro and dill that was planted in late October in some bed space we had open, overwintered as very small plants, and started to grow in February. The radishes are looking good and we should be harvesting those in two to three weeks, peas are up and growing, kale and chard look great, and the beets, hakurei turnips, and the spring planting of baby spinach are coming along too. We planted some head lettuce last week and a second planting of lettuce for salad mix too. This week we will be planting the brassicas to go with that lettuce planting for salad mix and that will fill out all the beds. Looking forward to getting tomatoes in on April 15th. |
