Hoophouse Build near Traverse CityHoophouse Build near Traverse City Written by Laura Haselhuhn Two weeks ago we did a hoophouse build at Autumn Winds Farm, in Kingsley (near Traverse City). Desirae manages the farm, and this is the first hoophouse on the farm. The build went really well. The weather cooperated and we finished a 30’x96’ hoophouse in 2 days!
The first day was groundposts, bows, hipboards, baseboards, windbracing and purlins. Day two was endwalls, plastic, doors and roll-up sides. The second day was windy, but then towards the evening it died down just enough so that we were able to pull the two layers of plastic over. As you can see from the photo, there was a small slope from one end of the hoophouse to the other. The groundposts were pounded in so that they were all level (some were pounded in more than others to achieve this). Then the baseboards were started even with the ground on the high end of the hoophouse, and run level all of the way down the hoophouse. So towards the low corner you can see that the baseboards aren’t even with the ground anymore. After the build Desirae can take an extra piece of plastic, a stapler and some drip tape and staple the plastic to the bottom of the baseboard (sandwich the plastic between the baseboard and drip tape), and then backfill in with soil to cover that gap.
Autumn Winds Farm will begin marketing their hoophouse produce this coming fall at various Traverse City area farmers markets. Their main crops are going to be specialty salad mixes. |
