Snowfall & hoophouses2/22/13 Two tips for when to start shoveling. Written by Laura Haselhuhn Snow piled past the hipboard & unevenly on the hoophouse pictured above, it is time to start shoveling. Last week a question came in about snow removal on the sides of the hoophouses, and when that should be done. Since there have been quite a few snowstorms over the past few weeks, it seems relevant to address that question on the blog. Gothic style structures or structures with a double layer of poly tend to shed snow better than their single layered or quonset style counterparts. If the structure doesn’t shed snow easily, it will be more important to keep an eye on it and use a broom to push the snow off of the roof. The snow shed from the roof will pile on the sides of the hoophouses, and wind may drift snow on the sides of hoophouses as well. Over the course of the winter, these piles on the sides of the hoophouse can become quite large. So when is it time to take out the shovel and remove the snow from the sides of the hoophouse? Two general guidelines apply with respect to snow piling up on the sides: 1. When the snow is piled past the hipboard (such as in the picture above). This is a sign that it is definitely high time to start shoveling. 2. When the snow is drifting unevenly down the length of the hoophouse or on one side and not the other (such as in the picture above). The snow piles on each side of the house should be equal height. If the snow piles are not equal height, there will be uneven pressure on the structure which could cause permanent damage. So if you notice uneven piling or drifting, then this is a good indicator that it’s time to start shoveling. Does anyone else have any tips to add?
